What is East African Community UK?
East African Community UK (EACUK) was established in 2008 as a project run by The NILE African Development Organisation, to provide culturally specific advocacy, information, referral and direct social services to the more than 12,000 East African, Somali, Oromo, Ethiopian, Eriterian and other African refugees, Asylum Seekers, Residents, Friends and International Students living in the North of England.
In 2008, the directors of The NILE, built collaborative relationships with community agencies and government programs throughout the North of England. The NILE incorporated as a Charitable Company Limited by Gaurantee - nonprofit organization in July 2008. This new project was initiated to reflect its core mission of helping all communities from East Africa.
The East African region covers an area of 1.8 million square kilometres with a combined population of about 100 million (July 2005 est.) and has significant natural resources. Tanzania has had a relatively peaceful history since achieving independence, in contrast to the wars and civil strife that have occurred in Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, and Uganda. Today East Africa seeks to maintain stability and prosperity in the midst of ongoing conflicts in the D.R. Congo, the Horn of Africa, and southern Sudan. The two most prevalent languages of East Africa are Swahili and English, although Arabic and French are also common.
